Well, if you watched the Oscars last night then you probably could figure out that it was Google’s Hot Trend of the day. Just about everywhere you looked, there was something related to that epic evening.

The odd thing was, the sub topics I expected to be the hottest (Heath Ledger) were nowhere to be found. Instead, there was tons of stuff about Jennifer Aniston and Jerry Lewis. I guess insulting a whole bunch of people is more talk worthy than being dead and winning an Oscar for what was one of the greatest performances in cinematic history. Heath, yuh done good.

But that’s the wonderful thing about Hot Trends…you can never really predict what the big ones are going to be. Sure, when holidays come up like Christmas and New Years, you can get a pretty good idea of what’s going to pop up. But the exact phrases that people are going to search for? You need a crystal ball to figure out that one.

That’s why I try to search for Hot Trends that I feel are going to be more long term. That way, if the trend itself dies out after a day, there is always a chance that the long term effects will still be felt. This is usually the case with a new game release. For the most part, those games stay popular (look at WOW) for a long time.

Picking the right trends to monetize takes some practice. In my signature, you’ll find a book that will really show you how to capitalize on the daily trends and make the most out of them.

Who knows what tomorrow’s hot trend is going to be?

Good question. Why even bother with Hot Trends? Is there any advantage to them? Do they stick around long enough for them to even be useful? And how much money can you even make from Hot Trends? Well, this article is going to try to answer some of these questions so you can decide if Hot Trends is something that could be right for you.

Hot Trends is essentially a list of the hottest searches at Google at any point in time. The list is updated every hour on the hour, usually. The top 100 trends are listed.

Some of these, upon first glance, you will notice as trends that have absolutely no value, such as when there is bad whether across an area and many of the trends are school closings and radio stations. These are pretty much worthless.

But then there are those special trends…the ones where a new product has come out, or maybe an upgrade to an existing piece of software. Maybe it’s a big sports event or a hit TV show that just had a big episode. Many of these can be easily monetized.

But the question is…how much? Can we make any significant amount of money from these trends? Again, this depends on the trend. In the case of a new piece of software, if it has an affiliate program, a lot of money can be made. I made as much as $500 in one day off of a new product in the IM niche.

Is it worth the effort? Well, the truth is, not a lot of effort needs to go into capitalizing on these Hot Trends. A simple blog and some social bookmarking is really all you have to do. For long term trends, a few articles can really bring a good number of visitors.

If you want more info, in my signature you’ll find a great book that I wrote on the subject that won’t cost you an arm and a leg. Plus, it includes a monthly membership that delivers my Hot Trend pick of the day right to your email box.

Hot Trends can be a very lucrative way of making some quick cash without having to do a lot of work and without having to spend any money at all.
